A Moment of Reflection

A short quiet moment to think about three friends who I knew were running the Leadville 100-Mile Run this weekend who all ended up with a DNF (Did not finish). What happened? What went wrong? No webcast for the race but the results were available this morning before I headed off to church, mighty quick of them. Why I was late for church! I Wish them the best in their recovery. I know they trained very hard, even making the long trips for some high altitude training.

I on the other hand had just gotten my first DNS (Did not start). What a surprise it was to see my name on the DNS list. Well not really a DNS, I withdrew from the race back in May when my plans for altitude training fell through. Someone just forgot to take my name off the list. I knew it was going to happen since I kept receiving email and snail mail from the race organization. They did refund my money no questions asked however since it was early enough in the process.

Congratulations to all who started regardless of outcome. Meanwhile I will be stalking my friends Facebook pages to get clues. I'll get in touch with them when they have recovered.

[Update] Make that four runners.

  1. What about Texan Liza Howard though? Lots of Texans finished, what was practically very surprising, but good to see - not all is about altitude, some is about attitude:)

  2. Hey Rick, I missed the cutoff inbound at Twin Lakes (60m) by 15mins. I wasn't injured, didn't have stomach issues, legs stayed strong the whole way. Just took me a lot longer to climb hope on the front side (lost at least 30 mins resting and stepping aside for the leaders). Was an awesome day and awesome people there. I learned alot.

  3. Bummer for all of your friends. Keep us posted on the reasons, please - it will be instructive for those of us who have Leadville on our wish list.

  4. Olga: So Liza Howard is a Texan, I heard from Drymax's twitter post that she won the women's race. Congrats to her. Maybe they are all like Larry, unaffected by altitude :)

Scott: Good to hear from you. Sounds like you had a good day except for missing the cut-offs. Now you know what to do for next time if you decided to enter again. I hope you do.

    Donald: Thinking the same thing.

  5. Rick...my buddy Paul - 2 Time Hardrock 100 finisher and Texan...is convinced that training in the heat...helps him at altitude...have no idea if it is true...but it works for him.

  7. Bummer about your friends at Leadville. Which race are you opting out of?

I'm officially out of P2P. Gut-wrenching but had to be done.

  10. Leadville was FUN!! I had to DNF because of a silly foot issue that is now called peroneal tendonitis!! I pulled into mile 60 and got out and all of a sudden "twinge"...60-70 was a long hobble. It was really fun and I was the most coherent drop ever...I wish I had an extra foot...I was ready to kill it! I'm healing up and looking forward to Javelina!

  12. That great huh! Well you were definitely one of the runners I was thinking about Sunday morning. I bet it was fun with all the runners, their crews and spectators. Leadville is probably as crowded as it ever gets in an ultra 100. Well I hope you recover quick and see you in Javelina.
